Clay Lovejoy an owner of Three Pickles will be one of the professional sandwich slingers for the first ever Santa Barbara Sandwich Showdown this Friday, February 3 from 4 to 5 p.m. at Whole Foods Market, 3761 State St. in Santa Barbara.

Three contestants – the two pros (Savoy Cafe & Deli is other pro) and one amateur/home cook face off in a sandwich-making competition inspired by Top Chef and Tom Colicchio. The winner will receive a $250 Whole Foods shopping spree and other prizes. Co-sponsored by UCSB Arts & Lectures, Whole Foods Market and the Santa Barbara Independent. Admission to the S.B. Sandwich Showdown is free.

This SB Sandwich Showdown is an advance event for An Evening with Tom Colicchio – Top Chef’s influential head judge and James Beard Award-winning chef will be at Campbell Hall at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22 in his Santa Barbara debut.

Three Pickles has two locations to satiate your appetite: Downtown at 126 E. Canon Perdido St. at the old Jimmy’s Oriental Gardens Dining Room. Since opening in the historic location, the deli has proven itself as a keeper on the Santa Barbara sandwich scene. It won the Lazarus Award in the Independent’s Foodie Awards this past September. The award noted, “Three Pickles already served up some of the town’s best sandwiches (their Presidio alone is in the running for perfect pastrami),but when they moved into the old dining room of Jimmy’s Oriental Gardens,it warmed the hearts (and livers, no doubt) of many who had missed that classic watering hole .” Open Monday – Saturday 11am – 4 pm. www.threepickles.com (805)965-1015. A second location is in Goleta at 420 S. Fairview Avenue and it’s open Monday – Friday 11am – 3 pm. (805) 964-4585. Find Three Pickles on Facebook too !

For the vintner, medals from well-known oenophiles, like those at the San Francisco Chronicle, make the difference for their wines by reaching a larger audience. Christian Garvin, Oreana’s owner/winemaker, is delighted to have received a Gold Medal from the Chronicle’s judging panel for his 2008 release of Tilly, which is a blend of 60% Sangiovese and 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, often called “Super Tuscan” by Italian winemakers in the traditional Italian style.

Tilly was created by Garvin to honor his Italian grandmother Matilda ‘Tilly’ Maglio, who passed away from Alzheimer’s in 2007. Garvin designated 10% of all sales from this wine to go to the California Central Coast Alzheimer’s Association.

Silver Medals were awarded to Oreana’s 2008 Pinot Noir, 2009 Chardonnay, 2008 Bacon Reserve Syrah and the 2009 Syrah. All of the award-winning wines retail for $18, except the Bacon Reserve priced at $24.99.

Gabe Saglie, distinguished wine writer for the Santa Barbara News Press, in his review of Tilly stated, “This wine delivers on two fronts: It’s that easy-drinking red wine and it’s a wine with a great story… an engaging, approachable red that is generous on fruit. Bright and almost bouncy upfront with a peppery backbone and a rich finish. And nice aromatics: flowers, berries and currants. Tilly is an ideal partner to any grilled meat dish on your holiday table.”

Oreana wines are sold in 17 states and in China. You can find the label locally at the winery, Trader Joe’s, Albertson’s, Whole Foods and many more.

AUTISM FACTS

1 in 110 children is diagnosed with autism (Centers for Disease Control, December 2009).

1.5 million Americans are living with the effects of autism spectrum disorder.

The estimated lifetime cost of caring for a child with autism ranges from $3 to $5 million.

More children will be diagnosed with autism this year than cancer, diabetes, Down’s syndrome and AIDS combined.

Autism knows no racial, ethnic, or social boundaries, and family income, lifestyle, and educational levels do not affect the chance of autism’s occurrence.

Autism is four times more likely in boys than girls.

Autism is not a mental illness. Children with autism and related pervasive developmental disabilities are born with the disorder or the potential to develop it.

Autism is a complex developmental disability that typically appears during the first three years of life and affects a person’s ability to communicate and interact with others.

Autism is considered a “spectrum disorder,” meaning that its symptoms and behaviors can present themselves in a variety of combinations, from mild to severe.

No single cause for autism has been identified.

Autism can be treated, but there is no cure.

The appointment marks the beginning of a new chapter in this dance & visual artist’s career and allows him to bring his vision to the forefront leading the only professional contemporary dance company in town. Simon Williams, Chair, Department of Theater and Dance, UCSB stated, “We are delighted that Christopher Pilafian, who has had a most distinguished career with some of the leading figures of modern dance in America, has taken over as Artistic Director of SBDT. We look forward to the company sustaining the high level of work that has been seen so frequently from them over the years.”

Pilafian, who has choreographed 40+ pieces including commissions for Princeton University, Dance Kaleidoscope, Jennifer Muller/The Works, Repertory-West Dance Co., Santa Barbara Dance Theater (SBDT) as well as San Diego Dance Theatre and soloists Nancy Colahan and Danah Bella, will bring his visual art sensibilities to the company. “I see the company as a creative working ground for dance artists and collaborators to ask new questions, engage in forward-looking dialogue and discover ways to advance the possibilities of dance and multi-media performances,” said the choreographer. Pilafian has danced on stage, television and film with such well-known dance luminaries as Alvin Ailey, Judith Jamison, Charles Moulton, Louis Falco, Lynn Taylor-Corbett, Pearl Lang and others.

UCSB has boasted a dance company-in-residence since 1978, when Professor Emerita, Alice Condodina founded Repertory-West Dance Company. In 1991, Jerry Pearson transformed the group into Santa Barbara Dance Theatre. Pilafian joined the UCSB faculty in 1990 after working with New York based Jennifer Muller/The Works for 15 years. Beginning in 1974 as a founding member and principal dancer, he moved up to Associate Artistic Director. That dance company toured extensively throughout Europe, the Middle East, North, Central & South America giving Pilafian a unique world-view of dance and bringing all this experience to bear as a dance professor for scores of students. Some of these protégés have gone on to work in well-known dance companies such as Momix, David Parsons, Jean Isaacs’ San Diego Dance Theater, John Malashock Dance, Muller/The Works, Shen Wei Arts and others.

Last spring, Dance Magazine noted in a feature piece how, via Pilafian’s longtime relationship with Muller, the UCSB faculty and students threw themselves with gusto into a one-day national conference to acknowledge Muller’s effect on the dance world. Titled “Transformation & Continuance: Jennifer Muller and the Reshaping of American Modern Dance, 1959-present,” it consisted of a beautiful photographic exhibit, a series of talks and a performance of Muller’s seminal 1974 work, Speeds. The idea was sparked by Pilafian and taken into action by Ninotchka Bennahum, also on the UCSB faculty. Pilafian described an early impression of Jennifer’s dancers: “The air between them was crackling. The whole stage exploded with the personal energy of relationships. On top of the pieces being beautifully danced and crafted, a circle with everyone shining in their own individuality created group synergy.” Pilafian talked about taking Muller’s ideas into teaching. “…to feel the body, you have to be introspective. When many students are preoccupied, thinking about whether they want to be an engineer, awakening that deep awareness in the body can be challenging. If students are fully engaged in the process, they can direct their energy to express playfulness and a huge range of human qualities.”

On January 18th, SBDT and Pilafian will host an invitation only, preview event in preparation for a new season to open 2012-13. The company plans to build a strong west coast touring network for the presentation of forward-looking dance/theatre work. This season Pilafian’s choreographic talents are on display at UCSB for “Cloud Nine” by Caryl Churchill directed by colleague Annie Torsiglieri as well as the opera “L’Incoronazione di Poppea,” (5.4.12 – 5.6.12) directed by Simon Williams for the Music Department.

(December 11, 2011) Alison Riede, owner of the Santa Barbara-based online cupcake company Sugar Cat Studio, was the winner of Sunday night’s episode (12.11.11) of Cupcake Wars on the Food Network. Riede is the fourth baker from Santa Barbara to be on the show, but the first one to take home the top prize.

Now entering its fourth season, the show pits four bakers from across the country in a competition to create the tastiest and most attractive cupcakes based on a theme the show selects. This episode’s theme was the Hollywood Christmas Parade. Her competitors were from L.A., Las Vegas & Chicago.

Sunday night’s first challenge was to turn an outdated Christmas tradition into a contemporary cupcake. Riede did a play on a traditional cheese log, creating a sharp cheddar cupcake topped with a candied pecan crust and a honey blue cheese frosting that drew raves from judges Candace Nelson and Florian Bellanger.

In the presentation challenge, she created cupcakes based on three classic Christmas movies – a white chocolate coconut cream cupcake for “White Christmas,” a mulled wine cupcake based on Clarence the angel’s favorite drink in “It’s a Wonderful Life,” and an Ovaltine chocolate chip cupcake inspired by the decoder ring scene in “A Christmas Story.”

Riede, her assistant Erica Lively and a team of bakers from the show then created 1,000 cupcakes and an elaborate stand on which to display them to seal the win. The victory earned her $10,000 and the opportunity to offer her cupcakes to celebrities at the Hollywood Christmas Parade on Nov. 27.

Riede has been developing Sugar Cat Studio (www.sugarcatstudio.com) for the past three years. The company offers custom catering for weddings and other special events on California’s Central Coast and has sold its custom-made cupcake wrappers worldwide. Recently it has branched out by offering cake pops and hosting wine-and-cupcake pairings.

Sugar Cat Studio’s cupcakes were featured in celebrity gift baskets at the 2010 Academy Awards. The company has donated its cupcakes to fundraisers for Santa Barbara’s Organic Soup Kitchen, the California Central Coast Alzheimer’s Association, the Family Care Network and the Santa Barbara County Arts Commission.

Riede, 29, grew up in Syracuse, N.Y., and graduated from Syracuse University’s School of Visual and Performing Arts. After working as a paper and fabric designer in Manhattan, she moved to California to get her master’s in education at UC Santa Barbara.

About the Show

It’s cupcake vs. cupcake in Food Network’s tastiest competition yet! Each week on Cupcake Wars, four of the country’s top cupcake bakers face off in three elimination challenges until only one decorator remains. The sweet prize: $10,000 and the opportunity to showcase their cupcakes at the winning gig. Whether a special Ace of Cakes anniversary celebration, a star-studded magazine party or an A-list celebrity golf tournament, these Cupcakes Wars really heat up. Candace Nelson (owner of Sprinkles Cupcakes) and Florian Bellanger (chef and co-owner of online macaroon company MadMac) serve as permanent judges with a third rotating judge each week, and Justin Willman hosts.
