Movie Moguls Wanted…No Experience Necessary

First ever Community Film Studio Opens!

(April 9, 2012) Lights, Camera, Action! Launching on Sunday, April 29 Santa Barbara is now home to the world’s first ever, non-profit, all-volunteer, community film company — Community Film Studio Santa Barbara (CFSSB). Based on the traditional model of a community theater group, CFSSB wants everyone who shares an interest in movies to join and become a part of film making history. CFSSB brings together experienced professionals with those with little or no experience — a true community of friends of all ages, backgrounds, and experience — to collaborate and make movies locally for audiences globally. Most important in the mix is to have fun doing it. These will be truly independent films of which everyone can be proud of having made a contribution. Event will take place at the Marjorie Luke Theatre, 721 Cota St. from 4 – 6 p.m. Info @ www.CFSSB.org.

Board president and chief instigator, Jack Presnal said, “Films to be produced will be very modestly budgeted. Their excellence will come from the contributions of the members. No matter your background, there is a role in CFSSB for everybody. Making a movie requires the widest range of skills, not just technical film skills, to reach the screen. So, truly, even with no experience or background, there is an important part for everyone to play.”

First film for CFSSB will be under the tutelage of well-known actress Finola Hughes, who is expanding her repertoire to directing with this first feature for CFSSB. She said, “I am extremely excited to be involved in this endeavor; joining my community in the launch of such a new, autonomous venture in film making.”

To get started, it’s easy. Just follow these steps and you’re on your way to working in the movies!

Start at the CFSSB website: http://www.cfssb.org

1. Complete an online application and join ($25 per individual or $50 for a family. Dues can be paid via cash, check or MC/Visa/AMEX.).
2. Join a committee and start helping to shape our process and path. This is YOUR film studio.
3. Consider crew positions you might have skills in, or are interested in learning about. There are many positions that require no film background or training.
4. Take a workshop and start becoming a master at one of the many areas of production.
5. Once the shooting schedule is announced, try to make time available in your schedule to be able to participate. This is the single most important contribution you can make.
6. Become a part of the film’s promotional effort through Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, etc. Help build awareness and interest in others seeing the film. Not only will we make the films but we will distribute them as well. We ARE the marketing department!
7. Bring all your neighbors to a screening. Buy the DVD. Download and watch.
8. Now, let’s start on the next movie.

Board members for CFSSB include: Jack Presnal, Founder & President; Annie J. Dahlgren, Treasurer; Phebe Mansur, Secretary; Patrick Gregston, Kimi Vandyke, John Macurdy, James Kahn, and Jason Lehman.

It’s Not Okay
A Musical Journey to Inspire and Move You to Act

A Benefit Performance for CALM at the Lobero Theater

(Santa Barbara, CA) Linda Newlin, singer/songwriter, coach, speaker, educator and activist, has just finished writing her thought provoking musical journey entitled It’s Not Okay, along with the much-anticipated release of her new CD, Love Your Self. The world premiere performance will take place at the historic Lobero Theater, 33E. Canon Perdido St. at 7pm on Monday, April 9. Profits from the show will benefit CALM (Child Abuse Listening and Meditation), the Santa Barbara-based organization whose mission is, like the musical, to end all forms of abuse. You can see the music video of the title tune on YouTube @ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=idALxKBZ_W8 and you can also purchase Linda’s CD on her website @ LindaNewlin.com.

This musical delves into the multi-layered subject of why It’s Not Okay to abuse ourselves by not living our dreams, not being who we truly are and not shining our light in the world delivers multiple genres – from Broadway, to country, rap, rock and jazz. Mixed in with laughter and words of wisdom, this one woman show provides hope as we collectively search for life’s purpose and that which makes us ‘sing.’ This inspired music has been written and recorded in collaboration with extraordinary singer/songwriter, Kate Wallace and David West, of Play Ball Musical Services. According to Newlin, “I was fortunate to work with amazing local talent who supported my passion for authenticity and encouraging people to live their dreams by breaking free from all forms of abuse. It’s not just physical and sexual violence. It’s all the ways we abuse ourselves with negative self-talk, staying in empty relationships, working in unfulfilling jobs, and not allowing ourselves to be who we truly are.”

David West, producer of Love Your Self, says, “Linda Newlin’s new CD Love Your Self is a beautiful and courageous wake up call. It is a long overdue proclamation that at least one woman will no longer tolerate society’s tacit acceptance of the many faces of child abuse, domestic violence, and self abuse. Nor will she allow those afflicted to recede into the shadows of ‘victim-ness.’ Within this amazing album of songs is a highly motivational lesson in just how to Love Your Self. The point of Love Your Self is not just to point an accusing finger at the man/woman in the mirror, but to show us finally, each of us have the power to turn the light on all forms of abuse and heal the personal and societal wounds.”

West continued, “I have observed Linda throughout the process of production, and I can only describe her as a ‘Force of Nature.’ I watched as she focused her energy on her goal. I watched as her energy attracted a cadre of creative people who seemed to come from nowhere to give advice, support and talent at just the time it was most needed. And with the guidance of the amply talented Kate Wallace, I’ve seen her emerge as a gifted songwriter and song interpreter. I have a feeling this is just the opening salvo.” West owns Studio Z and Play Ball Musical Services here in Santa Barbara.
It’s Not Okay is written, directed and performed by Newlin, with sound and multi-media design by Annie J. Dahlgren of Over 40 Productions. Tickets to It’s Not Okay are available at the Lobero box office or online at www.lobero.com. VIP tickets are $100 and include CD/gift bag and reception with celebrity friends following the performance in the Lobero courtyard. General tickets are $40 and Students/Seniors $20 (all prices plus $5 facility fee). The Lobero Theatre is located in the heart of downtown at 33 E. Canon Perdido St., Santa Barbara. Box Office hours are Monday through Friday, 10am to 5pm and Saturday, 12pm to 5pm and two hours prior to all shows. Phone: (805)963.0761. For Immediate Release
Press Contact: Maureen McFadden
(805)689-5053/momcfadden@aol.com

Leaping into 2012 with Santa Barbara Children’s Chorus

February through May has many exciting events including an
a cappella Workshop, Kids Expo at La Cumbre Plaza,
Earth Day performances & a Fundraising Concert with major chorus of note

Santa Barbara Children’s Chorus is breaking out in a string of events for the community to enjoy. Spring 2012’s theme for the chorus is ‘Think Globally, Sing Locally’ and will feature works sung ‘a cappella’ – singing without accompanying musical instruments and using the beauty of the human voice entirely for projection and musical entertainment, and songs that highlight the beauty of our world and importance of conservation. Sixteen members of the Concert Chorus ranging in age from eight to 14 hailing from local elementary and junior high schools will be a part of all the concerts and workshops.

Leading the Santa Barbara Children’s Chorus Concert Chorus is Erin Bonski, a high energy, innovative choral director who applies her many years of experience as a vocal coach and piano accompanist to her natural ability of working with children. Erin holds multiple degrees in Music from Bowling Green State University in Ohio, and her Doctorate from UCSB with an emphasis on vocal teaching. Erin has coached local singers and her students have performed on all the major stages in Santa Barbara, as well as having recorded with major artists, including Andrea Bocelli. “Joining the chorus as the director of the Concert Chorus is a wonderful completion of my talents and I can’t wait to see the results this season,” says Bonski. Erin joined the Chorus this past fall.

SBCC’s Concert Chorus was featured in the production of “La boheme” for Opera Santa Barbara last year. Other community involvement and collaborations are sought and as Executive Director of Santa Barbara Children’s Chorus,Paul Freeman said, “What I want to give these kids is the choral experience I had here when I was growing up. Living inSanta Barbara with a vibrant arts community affords a great opportunity for students who want to pursue a career in the arts, or who just want to express themselves through singing. For our students, working alongside professionals and the experienced staff of the Concert Chorus will serve them in so many ways in life. Even if a career in the music is not what they want, artistic expression, like singing, provides so much more by stretching the limits of their imaginations.” Freeman continued, “Every session, we’ll have a theme to follow – in the Fall, it was Opera, this Spring it’s a cappella, next session might be rock ‘n’ roll – we hope the themes resonate with the kids and the parents and help form a continuum for the season.”

First out of the gate is a workshop on Saturday, February 25 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. with the women students from UC Santa Barbara’s a cappella group – VocalMotion – who are collaborating with SBCC in a “Rock Cappella Workshop” and opening it up to the public for a limited number of spaces at a very low price. Pre-registration online is highly recommended as there are only 30 spaces available and it’s a deal at $5; while walk-ins will pay $10. Students ages eight to 14 are welcome. You can easily register on the organization’s website at sbchildrenschorus.com.

On March 3, SBCC will be part of ParentClick.com’s “Kids Expo” at La Cumbre Plaza, where they’ll be singing several songs on stage and promoting their upcoming summer “Showtime” camps.

Earth Day Weekend has the SBCC Concert Chorus singing a selection of songs, including familiar favorites like I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing and original works like, It’s Up to You and Me, around town on Sunday, April 22. Show times will be posted on the organization’s website.

Closing the season on a high note is a fundraiser in May when SBCC will host a concert featuring the Grammy® award winning Phoenix Boys Choir in an outstanding evening youth choral music. SBCC will be featured in the program along with three vocal groups from UC Santa Barbara – VocalMotion, Naked Voices and BFOM, as well as other local groups to be announced in the coming months. A more concentrated presentation of vocal prowess will be hard to find. The event is a fundraiser for SBCC’s programs and scholarships. Keep an eye out and save the date so you can get your friends and family together for an evening you’ll never forget.

Santa Barbara Children’s Chorus is a county-wide, non-denominational music education and performing organization for children ages 8-14. We provide children of the community with the opportunity for musical training and performing in a fun and challenging environment. Founded in 1993, SBCC will be here for years to come to serve your children. With the continuing decline in funding for school-based music programs, especially in the elementary and secondary school levels, SBCC is dedicated to filling a vital gap in bringing the benefits of music and vocal performance to children.

Clay Lovejoy an owner of Three Pickles will be one of the professional sandwich slingers for the first ever Santa Barbara Sandwich Showdown this Friday, February 3 from 4 to 5 p.m. at Whole Foods Market, 3761 State St. in Santa Barbara.

Three contestants – the two pros (Savoy Cafe & Deli is other pro) and one amateur/home cook face off in a sandwich-making competition inspired by Top Chef and Tom Colicchio. The winner will receive a $250 Whole Foods shopping spree and other prizes. Co-sponsored by UCSB Arts & Lectures, Whole Foods Market and the Santa Barbara Independent. Admission to the S.B. Sandwich Showdown is free.

This SB Sandwich Showdown is an advance event for An Evening with Tom Colicchio – Top Chef’s influential head judge and James Beard Award-winning chef will be at Campbell Hall at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22 in his Santa Barbara debut.

Three Pickles has two locations to satiate your appetite: Downtown at 126 E. Canon Perdido St. at the old Jimmy’s Oriental Gardens Dining Room. Since opening in the historic location, the deli has proven itself as a keeper on the Santa Barbara sandwich scene. It won the Lazarus Award in the Independent’s Foodie Awards this past September. The award noted, “Three Pickles already served up some of the town’s best sandwiches (their Presidio alone is in the running for perfect pastrami),but when they moved into the old dining room of Jimmy’s Oriental Gardens,it warmed the hearts (and livers, no doubt) of many who had missed that classic watering hole .” Open Monday – Saturday 11am – 4 pm. www.threepickles.com (805)965-1015. A second location is in Goleta at 420 S. Fairview Avenue and it’s open Monday – Friday 11am – 3 pm. (805) 964-4585. Find Three Pickles on Facebook too !

For the vintner, medals from well-known oenophiles, like those at the San Francisco Chronicle, make the difference for their wines by reaching a larger audience. Christian Garvin, Oreana’s owner/winemaker, is delighted to have received a Gold Medal from the Chronicle’s judging panel for his 2008 release of Tilly, which is a blend of 60% Sangiovese and 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, often called “Super Tuscan” by Italian winemakers in the traditional Italian style.

Tilly was created by Garvin to honor his Italian grandmother Matilda ‘Tilly’ Maglio, who passed away from Alzheimer’s in 2007. Garvin designated 10% of all sales from this wine to go to the California Central Coast Alzheimer’s Association.

Silver Medals were awarded to Oreana’s 2008 Pinot Noir, 2009 Chardonnay, 2008 Bacon Reserve Syrah and the 2009 Syrah. All of the award-winning wines retail for $18, except the Bacon Reserve priced at $24.99.

Gabe Saglie, distinguished wine writer for the Santa Barbara News Press, in his review of Tilly stated, “This wine delivers on two fronts: It’s that easy-drinking red wine and it’s a wine with a great story… an engaging, approachable red that is generous on fruit. Bright and almost bouncy upfront with a peppery backbone and a rich finish. And nice aromatics: flowers, berries and currants. Tilly is an ideal partner to any grilled meat dish on your holiday table.”

Oreana wines are sold in 17 states and in China. You can find the label locally at the winery, Trader Joe’s, Albertson’s, Whole Foods and many more.
